The following is an excerpt from Conversion: A Series of Sermons by B. F. Manire.
"Paul to the Ephesians says, "Unto him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus unto all generations forever and ever. Amen" (Eph. 3:21). Glory that is to be ascribed to God, and so justly due by all intelligences of earth and heaven --all his glory -- is to be in Christ, and in his holy church, Glory, then will never reach the divine and majestic Creator who sis on the throne of heaven, except it be ascribed through Jesus Christ in the church of his love. He can not be glorified in any institution or society."
"When we stand before God in judgment, we will not stand in groups to be judged by what characterized each group as a whole. I fear that many have this concept, that is they belong to a church which is noted for its good works, that they individually will be judged favorably even though they personally were no part of that which made the church effective. In judgment we stand alone that, " every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.""
They (the disciples) proved slow learners, the Gospels tell us (Mk. 8:17-21/9:10,32/ John 12:16). Even by the time of Jesus' death they did not really understand what was going on, and the resurrection took them completely by surprise. Then at last the truth began to dawn on them, and Jesus' patient teaching, remembered but not yet understood, began to come to life as well. They had learnt their lessons well, and before long the loyal activists in a dimly understood cause became the theological brains behind the world's most successful ideological movement."
"Young people today are not dumbbells. You cannot woo them into the church with a basketball and a coke machine, then subtly try to squeeze in unconsciously a little religion and expect it to captivate them. No, they are intelligent enough to participate in the good time and skip the religion. As the lamented John D. Cox declared, 'If you hamburger them to get them into the church you will have to hamburger them to keep them there.’"
