As the foreword reveals, the book is the complete notes by James Hoover, a student of the class (Sacred Didactics taught by J.W. McGarvey). The book outlines exegesis of epistles, 1 Corinthians, Galatians, and Ephesians. It then continues to the notes on proper studies of topics and includes somewhat exhaustive notes on the topics of faith, repentance, confession, and baptism.

Although it is only the notes, which were taken very objectively point by point with minimal if any comments made by the note-taker it seems, the book is very helpful on keeping true to a topical study rather than "proof-texting." McGarvey begins with the text inductively and gains conclusions from the text, rather than vise versa. This method obligates the investigator of the topic to seek out all biblical uses of the topic and its proper context.

"The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains proves that he has no brains of his own."
