I recently ran across this old article that appeared in the January 1, 1933 edition of the Old Paths Advocate. I appreciate the author's simplistic approach of quoting Scriptures as answers. Scripture can speak for itself, yet we often feel the need to add to it, or even worse, explain it away. May we listen when Scripture speaks.
"Why I Smoke" Scripturally Answered
1- “Because I like it.”
Ans. “And they that are of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with the passion and the lust thereof” (Gal. 5:24). “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col. 3:17). “Christ shall be magnified in my body” (Phil. 1:20).
2- “I like to be sociable.”
Ans. “Go forth unto Him without the camp bearing His reproach” (Heb. 13:13). “Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God; whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God” (Jn. 4:4). “Come ye out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing” (2 Cor. 6:17). “She (all) that giveth herself to pleasure is dead while she liveth” (1 Tim. 5:6). “My little children, guard yourselves from idols” (1 Jn. 5:21).
3- “Because I don’t believe it does me or anybody else any harm.”
