Is Gay Marriage A "Right"?
by Nathan Battey
According to the Declaration of Independence there are such things as self-evident truths, a Creator, and unalienable rights given by the Creator. I believe and agree with these statements not because our founding fathers thus stated them, but because they are taught throughout the Bible (such as Gen. 1:26).
Our founding fathers recognized that God gave us the rights we poses; thus in order to declare something as a right we must prove that God did in fact give it to us. When people argue that Gay Marriage is their right, I simply question who gave them that right? Rest assured, it was not God (Romans 1:26-27).
The “Gay Marriage” movement is being compared to the Civil Rights movement, but the two are in no way related. During the Civil Rights movement the point of discussion was whether or not blacks were as equally human as were whites. The question was not about some sort of behavior, but about what it meant to be a human and made equally human in the image of God (Gen.1:26).
The controversy today surrounding “Gay-Marriage” can not be compared to the Civil Rights issue because it has nothing to do with how men are born or how God created them. Men are not born gay in the way men are born either black or white. Now, our media is trying to trick people into thinking that a “gay gene” has been discover, but all such rumors are false. We are all born equally human and are given free will to choose between right and wrong (Deut. 30:19). However, we do not have the right as humans to redefine Truth; God is the creator and the one who determines right from wrong.
Thus, “Gay Marriage” cannot be argued on the grounds of equal rights unless humans redefine the source of our rights.
Why do we not accept murder as every individual’s “right”? is cannibalism not a “right”? Why doesn’t a woman have the “right” to marry her horse? Because God did not give wickedness to men as a “right”.
Romans 1:28-32
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
Paul argues that the reason men practice such wickedness as is described in these verses is because men have not, “retained God in their knowledge” and because they have a “debased mind.”
When people professing to be Christians begin arguing that it is a man’s right to marry another man, it is evident that they have lost sight of the Giver of Rights.
Romans 3:4
“Let God be true and every man a liar.”
