The Social Gospel's Catch Phrase by Nathan Battey

“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”  - Author Unknown.

I was first introduced to this saying as a teenager at a gospel meeting.  I don’t recall anything else about the sermon, but when I heard this saying I liked it and wrote it inside the back of my Bible.  Through the years I have heard numerous brethren, young and old alike, repeat it as they give instruction about evangelism.  As I have reflected on this saying I have begun to question, “Is this a valid saying and does it reflect the tenor of the gospel?”  What once struck me as a profound saying has begun to raise serious concerns in my mind.

As stated above, the author of the saying is unknown.  Credit is often given to Theodore Roosevelt, who popularized its usage but likely borrowed it from another source.  President Roosevelt used the phrase in a political context, meaning that before people will listen to what you have to say, you must first win their attention by meeting their felt needs.  I suppose the catch-phrase may ring true within a political setting, but how about a Christian and evangelistic setting?  Doo people truly not care what we know unless we fill their felt needs?  Should we first minister to people’s needs before presenting them with the gospel?

Catering to people’s felt needs in order that they might listen to the gospel message is the definition of the Social Gospel. The notion that the only way evangelism will work is by packaging it with a social stimulus package runs counter to teaching of Scripture.

In Romans 1:16 Paul boldly proclaimed, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes”.  The gospel, not charity, is the power of God unto salvation.  The Gospel does not need man’s ingenuity to help it along; it contains within itself the personal power of God.

When the apostle Paul arrived in a new city to preach the gospel, he did not first begin a charity organization to soften the people to the gospel.  Rather, he went into to the synagogue straightway and began conversing with the religious minded of the city in order to win their minds to the Lord (Acts 18:4).

Though it is true that both Jesus and his disciples healed the sick (many of whom were not members of the church), the purpose of their miracles were to confirm their message rather than generate public sympathy.  For example, in John 6 the Lord fed the 5,000 in the wilderness to demonstrate his power as the Savior and New Moses, yet when the people ignored the sign and asked for more bread the following day, Jesus turned them away.  In fact, it appears from the context that one of the main reasons Jesus fed the multitude was to set up the next day’s sermon.  Though Jesus could have provided food for the entire world as God did for Israel during the Exodus, Christs’ mission was not to bring physical bread, but the Bread of Life.
Do not misunderstand me; I am not advocating rudeness on the part of the Christian in presenting the Gospel.  Nor am I denying the need for Christians to engage in charitable works on an individual basis (Matthew 25:31-46).  What I am arguing is that our focus in evangelism must be on the Word, not the person.  The concept that “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care” should never become the church’s motto for evangelistic work.

Though I disagree with most of what he teaches and do not recommend his material by and large, John MacArthur did hit the nail on the head when he stated,

“Making the Lord the object of ministry obviates the need for compromise.  Those whose goal is ministering to people will be tempted to compromise to achieve that end.”

The church’s number one mission is to preach the Word, not serve tables (Acts 6:2 – Note: these were Christian tables that should not interfere with the preaching of the Word).  God expects the church to preach the Word in season and out of season (2 Timothy 4:2) and He expects people to respond to the preaching of the gospel (Romans 10:14-15), not soup kitchens.

When people and churches replace the preaching of the Word with social services they are expressing shame for the gospel and doubt about its ability to change people’s lives (Romans 1:16).  Why on earth would you want to trade the power of God’s salvation for temporary physical relief, or even worse, pleasure?

It is time the church stopped worrying about how she is perceived in the eyes of the world (1 Corinthians 1:22-23) and started unashamedly preaching the power of God.  Never, ever, ever apologize for God’s Word.  If His Word offends people, so be it.  If it causes people to stumble, let them lie.  If by preaching the gospel we are called fools, preach on (1 Corinthians 3:18; 4:10).  May the church strive for God’s approval, rest in His might, and proudly wear His name (Romans 16:16).

In short, if people don’t care about what you know when it comes to the gospel, keep looking until you find someone who does (Matthew 10:11-15).

When Family Problems Become Kingdom Problems by Nathan Battey

Of all the sermons I have given in my life I feel this one is the most needed in the majority of our congregations.  The majority of church problems with which I have dealt and observed have begun at the family level and escalated into a congregational problem and at times even a Kingdom crisis.  May fathers, families, and congregational leaders pay special attention to the warnings of this sermon and prayerfully reflect on its personal application.

Why Forsake God? by Nathan Battey

Though written to the nation of Judah shortly before she was carried away in Babylonian captivity, the words of Jeremiah ring true of many within the Lord’s kingdom today.

The rule of God as is taught by the faithful of God is looked upon as a burden to be cast off.  With joy and celebration brethren are casting off the yoke of Christ and declaring they will never return from their new found freedom.

Jeremiah’s questions still ring true: “Has God been a wilderness or a land of darkness?”  Has God not made provisions for His children and offered them unique guidance through His word?  How is it that brethren’s view of Christ and his reign can become so twisted?  Why is it that many view the Law of Christ as a yoke to be cast off? (Matthew 11:30).

Though many abandon Christ and his church, while mocking and ridiculing both, they often claim innocence in their rebellion.  Often the cry is raised, “Surely a loving God will not send someone to hell over __(insert the sin of your choice)__!”  Thinking their action is justifiable and beyond reprehension, they run wildly from God trusting in His mercy and ignoring His righteousness and wrath.

The final question in verse 36 is the most haunting of all:  “Why is it such a light thing for you to change your way?”

Human nature never changes.  Its nearly 2,700 years later and many of God’s children maintain the same attitude while counting it a light thing to change their way before God.  How is it that brethren can preach truth for years, and worship according to God’s set pattern, and then overnight exchange both for a “different way?”

To leave the path of God and run wherever you please is the sin of idolatry and rebellion.  Whether one runs after other gods or elevates themself to the position of God makes little difference; both are equally damnable.

May the closing words of Jeremiah ring clear within our ears:

  • “From it too you will come away with your hands on your head, for the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them.”  (Jeremiah 2:37)

Did the 3,000 Jerusalem Converts Commune Out of a Single Cup?

Advocates of multiple cups often tout the Jerusalem church as proof that the early church used more than one cup.  One man put it this way, “There is a question which leaves "one cup" adherents silent. Acts 2 tells us 3,000 were added to the Jerusalem church on the Day of Pentecost. How large would that cup have been?”

Deceitful Religious Debate Tactics by Nathan Battey

If you have ever had a conversation with anyone about the Bible, there has likely come a point where you and the other person came to a disagreement.  Having a discussion from two different points of view is not sinful (Acts 17:2-3), but the purpose of such discussions should be a searching for truth (1 Thess. 5:21).  In many instances, unfortunately, one side or the other sells out on the pursuit of truth and simply tries to win at all costs (most importantly the cost of truth).

In political discussions “winning at all costs” is called “mud slinging”.  If one candidate cannot meet the other candidate’s position, the losing candidate with jump ship and attempt to salvage a win by attacking the other candidate’s reputation, shortcomings, or intelligence.  Unfortunately, the tactics employed by political candidates often mirrors those used by people claiming to be Christians in “defending” the truth.

The following list, though by no means complete or exhaustive, exposes several deceitful tactics used in religious discussions.

The Cup of the Lord: Reintroducing The Tract and Discussion by Nathan Battey

Nearly 100 years ago exactly, the Lord’s church was divided when men began to introduce multiple cups into the Lord’s Supper.  One of the leading innovators in the division that took place was G. C. Brewer who prided himself by recalling, “after a long struggle, I got the individual communion cup into that congregation.” (speaking of a congregation in Columbia, Tennessee).

As the struggle to keep individual cups out of the communion service reached its peak, J. D. Phillips wrote his famous tract, “The Cup of the Lord” defending the use of a single container in the Lord’s Supper.  Brother Phillips’ tract has been reprinted on several occasions and still represents one of the finest works on the issue.

Shortly after “The Cup of the Lord” was published, G. C. Brewer reviewed it in three separate issues of the September 1st, 8th, and 15th issues of the Gospel Advocate in 1932.  In January of 1933, Brother Phillips wrote began a six part reply to Brewer’s review that would be published over the course of that year in the Old Path’s Advocate.

Both G. C. Brewer’s review and J. D. Phillips’ reply have now been transcribed and published in a hardbound book along with the tract “The Cup of the Lord” and an additional article by Brother Ronny Wade.   It is the hope of the publisher that much good will come from a careful consideration of this historic and spiritually significant material.  To hear Brother Brewer (though dead yet still speaking) defend his innovation, and to read the reply given by one in his own day (to which he did not respond) is enlightening to say the least.

May brethren the world over study with open hearts this critical issue that still divides the Lord’s church far and wide.  May brethren always speak where the Bible speaks, and be silent where the Bible is silent.  May God bless the brotherhood with peace and unity based on truth.

The Old "Antis"

10/15/2014

The term "Anti" is used in the religious world to label an individual or a group that is opposed to a certain teaching or practice.  It has long been a practice of digressive brethren to label those who disagree with them as “Antis” in an attempt to discredit a certain position without having to meet the issue.  For example, it is easier to write someone off as an “Anti-cups” or “Anti-class” brother than it is to meet the issue and find Scriptural authority for either the use of multiple cups in the Lord’s supper or the use of Bible classes as an alternative to the single assembly of the church.  The use of the “Anti” term is not only used to discredit a certain group of individuals, but is also used to place the cause of division over a certain issue on the individual or group who are “anti” a certain practice or innovation.

"Christian" Colleges:  Why They Are Not "Safe"

10/14/2014

In recent years there has been a growing trend for young people in the Lord's church to attend "Christian" universities when they go off to college.  It is the feeling of many that such "Christian" universities are "safer" than sectarian schools and will help promote Bible principles.  It is out of deep concern for the welfare of many souls and the future of the Church that I urge people to consider the following quotes from men such as N. B. Hardeman, W. W. Otey, G. H. P. Showalter, and J. N. Armstrong concerning the "Christian" colleges in the 1930's-1950's.  These preachers believed Bible colleges were Scriptural in nature (I disagree; the Scriptures neither imply, mention, nor approve of such innovations) yet they had great concerns about "Church of Christ Colleges" such as David Lipscomb University, Harding University, Abilene Christian College, and others.  The concerns these preachers had about "Christian" colleges paled in comparison to the reality of what is now being taught in each of these universities.

"The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains proves that he has no brains of his own."
                                                            - C. H. Spurgeon
